Running Armchairs 1985
The Very Beginnings
Long before VEAKING, The Running Armchairs began around 1984, the result of finding myself in the street in Cardiff, at 3am after being thrown out of a party for making too much noise. Having been discovered in the kitchen playing the pots, pans, cupboard doors, drawers and anything else that created a distraction from the dire durges that were emanating from the room designated as a dance floor.
Jon Conroy, Amanda Griffiths, Barry , Ceri Griffiths, Christine Baker, Alan Leysion and David Urmston, being the usual culprits each time. Accepting the inevitable, at that time there was nothing else to do, at the height of the 80's UK wide unemployment fiasco. No work to do, no money to spend in idle amusement, just a few quid for blow. We were so available for something to do that now it seems like we were just in the right place at the right time for daily jamming in one Cardiff flat/bedsit or another.
These tracks were captured in stereo on cassette tape, being the height of the cheapest portable recording technology of the day. Not a lot of control is possible beyond the volume of the embedded condenser microphone, so recording anything without the unintentional inclusion of a passing ambulance siren was always a most enjoyable challenge.
